We’re thrilled to report on our recent participation in the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Associations’ (SUMA) Intergovernmental Affairs Dialogue today. The event was a vibrant exchange of ideas, underscoring the commitment of local leaders to improve quality of life and address affordability challenges across Saskatchewan.
The panel featured key municipal leaders including Gerald S. Aalbers (City of Lloydminster), Bev Dubois (City of Saskatoon), Don Cody (City of Prince Albert), and Bob Hawkins (City of Regina). They tackled a range of critical issues facing communities across the province and raised by the 100+ community leaders at the session. A few of the topics raised, include:
- Clarity on Municipal Revenue Sharing
- Untaxed multi-million-dollar holiday homes in provincial parks and impacts on adjacent municipalities
- Water security, especially in relation to the Lake Diefenbaker Irrigation Project and securing future drinking water demand by residents
- Northern economic development
- Impacts of gravel hauls on secondary highways
- Aging infrastructure challenges, such as the demolition of buildings with asbestos
- Need for better support for municipal volunteer fire departments and emergency services
One notable update from the federal government concerns the 2024 budget amendment, which will double the annual support for volunteer firefighters from $3,000 to $6,000. However, this boost does not extend to funding for fire halls or equipment, areas critical as we approach the fire season. This issue presents a prime opportunity for garnering support at both provincial and federal levels.
For those who missed the event, the SUMA Annual “Bear Pit” Session is accessible here, and you can review the 2024 Resolutions here.
As proud sponsors, LB Strategies wishes all SUMA delegates a fruitful and insightful convention. We look forward to continuing our support for initiatives that enhance our municipalities and the lives of their residents.
