Over the past two decades, I have embarked on a remarkable journey as an election observer, crossing various countries in South America and Ukraine. These experiences have not only allowed me to witness democracy in action but have also bestowed upon me invaluable analytical skills, expertise, and insights into diverse perspectives.
Little did I anticipate that these encounters would also shape my professional career in the private sector. The knowledge I gained proved to be indispensable in navigating the intricacies of my chosen path in public affairs. It seamlessly translates into successfully managing the complex web of stakeholder relationships and regulatory compliance that organizations face in today’s economy. I firmly believe that my experience as an election observer has equipped me with the ability to offer a fresh perspective and innovative solutions to clients and challenges alike. Along the way, I have learned the importance of:
Mastering Complexity: When it comes to deploying election observers in foreign lands with distinct cultures and systems, adaptability and cross-cultural communication skills are paramount. The ability to embrace cultural diversity and swiftly respect different perspectives is crucial in comprehending the nuances of local political and social landscapes. Navigating the intricate web of cultural, political, economic and social complexities, both on a national and grassroots level, is an invaluable asset for any leader.
Neutrality: Election observers play a crucial role in monitoring potential conflicts during elections and adhering to protocols for reporting or addressing them. This requires a significant level of emotional intelligence, discipline, and diplomacy when engaging with groups that may hold opposing viewpoints or operating in unfamiliar environments. The art of neutrality becomes essential in finding mutually beneficial outcomes or a way forward for diverse and sometimes conflicting view points.
Compliance: As impartial observers, our responsibility is to assess the host country’s adherence to its own laws and regulations, without imposing our own beliefs. Democracy, much like life itself, is multifaceted and takes on diverse manifestations in different nations. The ability to anticipate conflicts and report observations in a factual and transparent manner is paramount in fostering trust among the electorate and stakeholders. In doing so, we contribute to the fortification of democracy as both a cultural value and the capacity of democratic institutions and systems.
In Canada, compliance is sometimes perceived as cumbersome bureaucracy or unnecessary paperwork. However, its underlying objective remains unchanged: to cultivate public trust in our institutions and systems.
Data Analysis: In today’s world, data analysis plays a crucial role in evaluating the integrity of electoral processes. It involves the real-time collection and analysis of extensive data to identify trends, patterns, and potential areas of concern. Data analysis serves as a crucial tool in recognizing opportunities for improvement and discovering effective solutions. Proficiency in collecting, analyzing, and presenting data clearly and concisely is an indispensable skill for professionals and leaders across various fields. Plus, the quality of the data and analysis has the ability to influence public opinion and shape the narrative around electoral processes.
Meaningful Connections: Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, observers possess a remarkable ability to effectively engage with stakeholders, quickly build trust, and gather substantial amounts of information and intelligence in a timely manner. Observers require collaboration with political parties, electoral commissions, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to effectively carry out their duties.
In addition, observers work alongside team members from diverse professional and personal backgrounds. Having exceptional interpersonal skills is crucial, not only for engaging the public, but also for effective communication and good relationships within the team. These relationships are vital for ensuring everyone’s safety and the success of the mission.
Listening closely to stakeholders – from boardrooms to street corners – to understand both their needs and their perspectives has granted me a valuable skill set that continues to enrich my work everyday. By taking an integrated approach to internal and external stakeholders, I am able to tackle complex problems from multiple angles while staying focused on the long-term goal. Election observation may be rooted in the realm of intergovernmental organizations and academia, but real-life missions offer a blueprint for the complex world of corporate engagement. And should not be underestimated.
I hope to be able to participate on another electoral mission next year. I find these experiences challenge my thinking and allow me to gain new insights from professionals around the world. Being a part of an international team working towards a common goal is truly inspiring and reinforces my belief in the importance of transparency, inclusivity, and integrity of electoral processes. Ultimately, as observers, our responsibility goes beyond monitoring and reporting on election day activities. It is about promoting democratic values and strengthening institutions for future generations.
